Hastings may be on the sea, but drinking water hasn't always been easy to get. Fortunately, two vast 35ft steam pumps were built in the Edwardian period to draw a million gallons of drinking water for the use of the people of Hastings. Go and see them working, on Waterworks Lane in Brede, near Rye - in one of their Bank Holiday public operating days - between 10am to 4pm today.
